Our take
This is our pick on the surf lessons page for anyone who has already had a lesson. It is a full day, about 7 hours, at a beach about 45 minutes south of the city in Royal National Park. You get two learn-to-surf sessions with accredited coaches, about four hours of coaching against ninety minutes on a standard lesson, plus boards, wetsuits, a 4WD ride on the beach, and a barbecue or picnic buffet in between.
Pickup is at 8:40am outside QT Bondi on Beach Road, or 9am at Central YHA in Haymarket, and you are dropped back near those points. The operator asks for each surfer's wetsuit size and an Australian phone number when you book. Two things to weigh: groups can reach 40, and the cancellation rule is strict, an 80% refund if you cancel at least 7 days ahead. It rates around 4.6 and the minimum age is 12.
Good for
- A second lesson with far more time in the water
- Travellers without a car. Transport is included
Think twice if
- Your plans might change within a week
- You want a small group. Bondi and Maroubra take 6 to 10
