What happens when you book
- Pick a tour below. The button opens it on Viator with the live price and dates.
- Choose the date, a morning or afternoon start where offered, and how many are going, then pay on Viator. Viator takes the payment; SydneySide Tours never sees your card details. For the Big Bus, choose 24 or 48 hours and whether to add the harbour ferry pass here.
- Viator emails a confirmation with the voucher, the operator’s name and phone number, and the meeting point or pickup window. The Big Bus ticket goes into the Big Bus app.
- On the day, be at the meeting point or outside your hotel by the time on the voucher. The Big Bus pass starts the first time you use it.
Cancellation. Every tour on this page refunds in full if you cancel up to 24 hours before the start. The card shows the rule.
Weather. Dingo Tours says it runs in all weather, and the guided tours travel in covered vehicles. If an operator does cancel, most listings promise another date or a full refund, and the listing’s own wording is the one that applies. AEA and Dingo can also vary the route on the day for weather or traffic.

What’s included and what’s not
Big Bus hop-on hop-off includes: a 24 or 48 hour ticket from first use, both the red city route and the blue Bondi route, pre-recorded commentary in eight languages, onboard WiFi and the app with live tracking. Children 2 and under ride free.
Big Bus doesn’t include: the Captain Cook harbour ferry pass or the night tour unless you add them at booking. The listing names hotel pickup as included, but it’s a hop-on service from its own stops, so plan to walk to one.
Guided tours usually include:
- A live guide and driver. The Sydney’s Wonders and Locl coach listings stress that the commentary is live, not recorded.
- Air-conditioned transport and photo stops.
- Bottled water on AEA, Dingo, Daily Sydney Tours and Runaway Tours.
- Hotel pickup on AEA, Dingo and the private tours. The coach tours and Story of Sydney use a meeting point instead.
Where they differ:
| Tour | Group size | Lunch | Walking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney’s Wonders coach | Up to 50 | Not included | Photo stops only |
| AEA half day | Up to 14 | Listed, but coffee at Bondi is your own cost | Light |
| Story of Sydney | Up to 10 | Not listed | Short walks at The Gap, Watsons Bay and Bondi |
| Dingo Tours | Up to 10 | Food and drinks listed | A 20 minute harbour walk with steps |
| Anderson’s Tours | Up to 11 | Listed, details unclear | A 45 minute guided Rocks walk |
| Daily Sydney Tours | Groups of 4 to 8 in reviews | Not included | Part of the Bondi to Coogee walk |
Never included: entry to the Opera House halls. Several tours stop outside the Opera House; a Runaway Tours reviewer noted it was an outside visit only. The halls need the separate Opera House guided tour.
The day, step by step
Sydney city tours come in two shapes, and they run very differently. The times below are the ones the listings publish.
On the hop-on hop-off bus
From 9:00am, board at any stop. The Big Bus runs from 9am to 4pm. The ticket lives in the Big Bus app, which also tracks the buses live.
The red route, about 1.5 hours if you stay on. Fifteen stops around the city, with a bus every 30 to 40 minutes. HAZEE, who filmed a full day on it, bought tickets at Darling Harbour and rode the city loop first, finishing at the Opera House.
Change for Bondi. The blue route has 9 stops and takes about 1 hour 20 minutes, with a bus every 35 to 45 minutes. HAZEE changed at the St Mary’s stop.
Get off, walk, get back on. That’s the point of the ticket, and it’s also where the day goes wrong. Big Bus reviewers on Viator report waits of 40 to 90 minutes at some stops and buses that drove past. HAZEE wanted the Opera House at sunset and arrived too late after the city loop.
Last buses around 4:00pm. Plan your final stop well before then. One reviewer expected 5pm and was caught out.
On a guided bus or small-group tour
8:30am to 10:00am, pickup or meeting point. Story of Sydney leaves the Four Seasons in The Rocks at 8:30am. Anderson’s Tours meets at Cadman’s Cottage, check-in by 8:25am. Sydney’s Wonders leaves Archibald Fountain in Hyde Park at 10:00am. Daily Sydney Tours collects its group at 9:00am at Darling Square and 9:15am at Circular Quay. AEA and Dingo Tours pick up from city hotels, morning or afternoon.
The harbour lookouts first. All six guided tours in the grid stop at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, for 5 to 25 minutes depending on the operator. Dingo Tours and Daily Sydney Tours also stop at Observatory Hill, and Dingo adds Dawes Point under the bridge.
East along the harbour to The Gap. Rose Bay, Watsons Bay and The Gap cliffs appear on five of the six listings, for 5 to 25 minutes each.
Bondi Beach, 20 to 50 minutes. All six stop at Bondi. Anderson’s gives it 50 minutes, the longest. Daily Sydney Tours adds 30 minutes on the Bondi to Coogee walk.
Back by early afternoon. The 3.5 hour bus tours advise you not to book anything before 2:30pm. Anderson’s finishes at about 12:30pm on Cumberland Street in The Rocks. Daily Sydney Tours runs about six hours, with lunch at your own cost.
Pass-bys are the catch. Kings Cross, Paddington, Double Bay and the Harbour Bridge appear on most itineraries as “pass by” only, which means through the window.
Meeting points and getting there
The hop-on hop-off bus has no single start, and the guided tours each use their own spot. The voucher names it.
| Tour | Where to be | When |
|---|---|---|
| Big Bus hop-on hop-off | Any stop on the red or blue route. HAZEE started at Darling Harbour | From 9:00am |
| Sydney’s Wonders bus tour | Archibald Memorial Fountain, Hyde Park North, 110 Elizabeth Street. Taxis: ask for St James station and walk | 10:00am, arrive 5 minutes early |
| Story of Sydney | Back entrance of the Four Seasons Hotel, Harrington Street, The Rocks | 8:30am |
| Anderson’s Tours | Cadman’s Cottage, 110 George Street, on the harbour-facing grass | Check in by 8:25am for 8:30am |
| Daily Sydney Tours, group | Novotel Sydney Darling Square, or Sydney Harbour Marriott at Circular Quay | 9:00am or 9:15am |
| AEA Luxury Tours, Dingo Tours | Outside your city hotel. Dingo collects only within the CBD, not North Sydney, Bondi, airport hotels or cruise terminals | Confirmed the day before |
| Private tours | Your hotel, or a central point within 3 km of the city centre | Set with the operator |
Getting there. Hyde Park North is a short walk from St James station. Cadman’s Cottage and the Four Seasons are a few minutes from Circular Quay station. The Sydney’s Wonders listing warns that digital wallets can show the wrong address, so use the one in the confirmation email.
Reconfirm the day before. AEA asks you to ring the office the day before to confirm your pickup. Dingo Tours wants confirmation 48 hours ahead, or 24 hours for a late booking.
Running late. Hotel pickups run to a schedule across several hotels. Ring the operator on the voucher number straight away. On the Big Bus, missing one bus means waiting for the next, which reviewers say can take 40 minutes or more.
What to bring
- Shoes for short walks. Story of Sydney includes short walks at The Gap, Watsons Bay and Bondi. Daily Sydney Tours walks part of the Bondi to Coogee track. One Dingo Tours reviewer found its 20 minute harbour walk, with steps and uneven stone, hard going for older travellers.
- A layer and sun cover on the bus. The Big Bus has an open top deck. Wander with TK says the view up there is the reason to ride, and that the seats fill because nobody wants to give theirs up. Dingo Tours runs in all weather and asks you to dress for it.
- A charged phone. The Big Bus ticket and live bus tracking both live in its app. The Captain Cook harbour pass uses phone commentary too.
- Earphones, if you want to hear clearly. The Big Bus commentary is pre-recorded in eight languages, and reviewers mention earbuds on board. Story of Sydney offers listening devices.
- Swimwear only if you plan to stay at Bondi. Guided tours give Bondi 20 to 50 minutes, enough for a walk on the sand, not a swim. On the hop-on hop-off you can get off and stay.
- Some cash or a card for coffee. AEA’s itinerary lists coffee at Bondi at your own expense.
Leave behind: big bags. Daily Sydney Tours’ group option isn’t suitable for children under 8 and carries no child restraints, so younger kids need a private booking.
How to choose
The real choice is between moving yourself and being driven. A hop-on hop-off ticket buys flexibility and a top-deck view. A guided tour buys a guide, a fixed route and no waiting at bus stops.
| Type | Tours | Good for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hop-on hop-off bus | Big Bus | Seeing the city at your own pace over one or two days, Bondi without a transfer | Recorded commentary, waits of 40 minutes or more reported, last buses around 4pm |
| Guided coach | Sydney’s Wonders, Locl | A cheap first look with a live guide in 3.5 hours | Up to 50 on board, short stops, many sights only passed |
| Small-group van | AEA, Story of Sydney, Dingo, Anderson’s | Questions answered, more stops, hotel pickup on most | Fixed start, 10 to 14 people |
| Long day or private | Daily Sydney Tours, Runaway Tours, City Unscripted | A full day with a coastal walk, or a route built around you | Most of a day, and private tours are priced per group |
What the dearer tours add. A smaller group, more minutes at each stop and someone who answers questions. The 50-seat coaches give Mrs Macquarie’s Chair 5 to 20 minutes; Story of Sydney gives it 25. Daily Sydney Tours adds a Harbour Bridge crossing on foot and a coastal walk.
The honest alternative. Much of what these tours cover, Sydney’s public transport covers too. You tap on with a contactless bank card or phone, fares are capped each day, and the cap is lower from Friday to Sunday. Ferries from Circular Quay run to Manly, Watsons Bay and Taronga Zoo, and route 333 runs from the city to Bondi. In the traveller videos we watched for Sydney, 5 of 6 recommended the public ferries as a cheap harbour cruise, and 4 of 6 found tap-on transport easy. What you give up is the guide, and the stops at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair and The Gap that need a car or a walk to reach.
Pick this if:
- It’s your first day and you want the whole city in one morning: a small-group van tour.
- You want two days of getting on and off, including Bondi: the Big Bus 48 hour ticket.
- You’d like history on foot as well as a drive: Anderson’s 45 minute Rocks walk, or a walk through The Rocks on its own.
Skip it if:
- You’re comfortable with a ferry and a bus. Our Sydney things to do guide sets out the free and Opal-fare version of the same day.
- You’d rather walk the centre with a guide than see it through a window. Book Sydney walking tours instead, or see the harbour from the water on a harbour cruise.
Our pick
If it’s your only city tour: Story of Sydney. Ten guests at most, an 8:30am start from The Rocks, and real time at five stops, including short walks at The Gap, Watsons Bay and Bondi. It rates 4.91 from 173 reviews and finishes in about four hours, leaving the afternoon free.
If you’ve done one before: the Daily Sydney Tours city highlights day. About six hours, lunch at your own cost, and 30 minutes on the Bondi to Coogee walk that the shorter tours skip. It rates 4.98 from 452 reviews.
The one we’d skip: the Big Bus, if you only have one day. It rates 3.96 from 2,862 reviews, and the recurring complaint is waits of 40 to 90 minutes between buses. On a single day, a guided tour or a ferry and a bus on Opal will show you more.
Season and timing
City tours run all year. The season matters most for the open top deck and for Bondi.
| Months | What changes |
|---|---|
| December to February | Summer heat on the open deck. Bondi is at its busiest, and the Bondi stops on guided tours are crowded |
| March to May | Autumn, one of the two seasons three of six Sydney travel videos recommended. Vivid Sydney lights the city from late May |
| June to August | Cool on the top deck. Shorter days matter on the Big Bus, which stops around 4pm anyway |
| September to November | Spring, the other season the videos recommended, and a good time for the walking options on the longer tours |
| 31 December | The Opera House stop isn’t accessible on the Sydney’s Wonders and Locl coach tours |
Morning or afternoon. AEA and Dingo offer both. The morning gets you to the lookouts before the crowds and leaves the afternoon free. The Big Bus is best started early, because the last buses run around 4pm and a missed bus can mean a long wait.
Pair it with something. The coach tours finish around the Opera House, and their listings advise booking nothing else before 2:30pm. That leaves time for the Opera House or a ferry across the harbour the same afternoon.
FAQ
Does Sydney have a hop-on hop-off bus?
Yes. Big Bus runs two hop-on hop-off routes in Sydney: the red city route with 15 stops and the blue Bondi route with 9. Tickets last 24 or 48 hours from first use, and buses run from 9am to 4pm.
What route does the Sydney hop-on hop-off bus take?
The red route loops the city in about 1.5 hours and the blue route runs out to Bondi in about 1 hour 20 minutes. Traveller HAZEE changed from red to blue at the St Mary's stop. Check the current route in the Big Bus app, as it can change for events.
How often does the Big Bus come?
The listing gives every 30 to 40 minutes on the red route and every 35 to 45 minutes on the blue. Reviewers report real waits of 40 to 90 minutes at some stops, so allow more time than the timetable suggests.
Is there a hop-on hop-off ferry in Sydney?
Yes. Captain Cook Cruises sells a 1 or 2 day harbour pass from Circular Quay Wharf 6 that stops at Taronga Zoo, Watsons Bay, Manly, Shark Island and King Street Wharf. Reviewers find the afternoon timetable thin. Public ferries reach most of the same wharves on Opal.
Is the Sydney hop-on hop-off bus open top?
Yes, the Big Bus has an open top deck, and it's the best view on the route. Traveller Wander with TK found the top seats hard to get because nobody gave theirs up. Take a layer: it's cooler up there than on the street.
Is there a night bus tour in Sydney?
Big Bus sells a 1.5 hour panoramic night tour as an add-on to the day ticket. The listing gives no times. Reviewers report confusion over which stop the night tour leaves from, so confirm it in the app before you go.
What's the best half-day city tour of Sydney?
For a small group, Story of Sydney rates 4.91 and takes 10 guests for about four hours. The AEA half day is the most reviewed at 753 reviews, with hotel pickup and up to 14 guests. Both stop at Bondi and Mrs Macquarie's Chair.
Is a guided bus tour better than the hop-on hop-off?
For one day, usually yes. A guided coach or van has a live guide, a fixed route and no waiting at stops. The hop-on hop-off suits two days and people who want to stay longer at Bondi or the harbour.
Is a city tour worth it, or is public transport enough?
Public transport covers a lot. Ferries from Circular Quay reach Manly, Watsons Bay and Taronga, and route 333 goes to Bondi, all on a capped daily fare. A tour adds a guide and lookouts like The Gap and Mrs Macquarie's Chair without planning connections.
Where can I find the Big Bus Sydney route map?
In the Big Bus app and on the operator's own site, which keep the current stops. We don't reproduce the map here because routes change for events like Vivid Sydney, and an old map sends people to the wrong stop.
Guide or ticket: settle that first, and the rest of the choice gets easy.
