Off a cruise ship?
The same walk as number 1, sold for cruise passengers. One walk here rates under 4.2: the cryptic clue game, at 4.15 from 13 reviews. One reviewer struggled with how the clues reach your phone, and it stays because it is the only self-guided option on Viator.
What happens when you book
- Pick a walk above. The button opens it on Viator with the live price and the start times that still have room.
- Choose the date, the time and how many are walking, then pay on Viator. Viator takes the payment; SydneySide Tours never sees your card details.
- Viator emails a confirmation with your voucher, the operator’s name and phone number, and the meeting point. Two walks here start at different cottages on different streets, so check which one is yours.
- On the day, check in at the meeting point by the time on the voucher. The 90 minute walk asks for 15 minutes early and leaves on the dot.
Cancellation: every walk in the grid allowed free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start when we checked. Later than that, plan on losing the booking.
Weather: these walks run in rain, and the 90 minute walk hands out umbrellas when needed. If an operator cancels, you are offered another date or a full refund.
Our cancellation and weather rules page explains what to do if a walk is called off.
What’s included and what’s not
Included on the 90 minute walk:
- A trained guide with voice amplification, so you can hear over George Street
- An umbrella if it rains
- The route through the lanes and down to the harbour, with free stops along the way
Included on the historian walk:
- About 20 sites and stories in 2.5 hours
- A look at the scale model of Sydney inside Customs House
- Entry at Customs House, Macquarie Place Park and The Argyle
- A folder of old maps, portraits and photos the guide works from
- Local tips for a drink or a meal at the finish
Not included on any of them:
- Food. The historian walk finishes beside the Endeavour Tap Rooms on Argyle Street, an easy place to stop next
- Drinks on the ghost walk, which lists alcohol, water and soft drinks as excluded
- Entry to Susannah Place Museum, the terrace houses on Gloucester Street, or any other museum on the route
The difference that matters most is depth. The 90 minute walk tells The Rocks story in four parts, from First Nations history through the convicts and the plague to the 1970s green bans, according to the guide interviewed on the Oz and Beyond Travel Series. The historian walk takes longer because it starts outside The Rocks, at Customs House and Macquarie Place, and works its way in.
The day, hour by hour
This is the classic 90 minute walk. The order of stops comes from the guide interview on the Oz and Beyond Travel Series (operator voice, filmed around 2022). The Viator listing gives the times: about an hour in the lanes, 10 minutes at the operator’s cottage, and short stops at Cadman’s Cottage and the bridge. The cottage itself is closed for conservation works, so that stop is outside.
- minus 0:15 Check in at Reynolds Cottage, 28 Harrington Street, next to The Tap Rooms.
- 0:00 The group leaves on time. The guide starts with First Nations history and the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788.
- About an hour in the lanes Down Suez Canal, a narrow lane, then Nurses Walk, Greenway Lane and Kendall Lane, and down to Campbell’s Cove on the harbour. When a cruise ship is in, it blocks the view.
- Short stops Past Cadman’s Cottage, with the Harbour Bridge overhead.
- Back into the lanes The ones the guide says you would not find alone, for the later stories: the plague, the government resumption, the green bans.
- 1:30 Finish where you started, on Harrington Street.
The historian walk runs on a longer clock. Ten minutes at Journey Walks, ten inside Customs House at the model, twenty in Macquarie Place Park, ten at the Tank Stream Fountain, then about 80 minutes in The Rocks before ten at The Argyle and the finish on Argyle Street.
World Wild Hearts took a 90 minute Rocks walk with a local guide and called it their favourite Sydney experience. Their tour was part of a GetYourGuide sponsorship, so read that as one couple’s view, not a review.
Meeting point and getting there
Reynolds Cottage is at 28 Harrington Street, beside The Tap Rooms, in the middle of The Rocks. Plan the trip to Circular Quay station and walk up into The Rocks from there. The streets are steep. Allow extra time if you have never been, because check-in is 15 minutes before the start.
Customs House, 31 Alfred Street, faces Circular Quay station. The historian waits outside on the right as you face the entrance, holding a white folder marked CONVICT HISTORY TOUR. The self-guided clue game also starts outside Customs House.
The ghost walk meets at Cadman’s Cottage, 110 George Street, the small sandstone house on the harbour side of The Rocks. The cottage is closed for conservation works, and the group meets outside it. Look for a guide in a black cloak. It finishes at the Hero of Waterloo on Lower Fort Street in Millers Point. The listing says the guide can help you get back to the start.
The long route from Hyde Park meets at the Archibald Fountain. Use St James station and ignore the 110 Elizabeth Street pin on Google Maps, which the listing says is wrong.
Late arrivals miss the walk. The 90 minute tour says so in its listing and gives a phone number for enquiries, which is on your voucher too. Ring it if you are running behind.
What to bring
- Shoes with grip. The listing for the 90 minute walk mentions cobblestones and worn sandstone steps over about 2 km, and both are slippery after rain.
- A hat and water, which the same listing suggests. Almost all of the walk is outdoors.
- An umbrella on the historian walk, which asks you to bring one if rain is likely.
- A contactless card or phone. Four of six traveller videos we compared said tapping a bank card on the trains and ferries works, which helps when a walk ends on the other side of The Rocks.
Pushing a pram? Book the 90 minute walk, the only one with a listed pram friendly route. Leave anything bulky behind on the others. The lanes are narrow and the group stops in them.
How to choose
| Type | Tours | Good for | Trade off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic circuit | Sydney The Rocks Guided Walking Tour | A first visit, prams, a short morning | 20 in a group, big name, busy |
| Historian led | Convicts and The Rocks | Convict history in detail | 2.5 hours, not wheelchair accessible |
| Long route | Sydney Walking Tour including The Rocks | Seeing Macquarie Street too | Under half its stop time is in The Rocks |
| Private | Discover The Rocks | Families, slow walkers | Dearer per head |
| Self-guided game | Cryptic Clues | Groups of up to four who like puzzles | No guide, mixed reviews |
| Ghost walks | Ghost tours | A second visit, older kids | Few reviews so far |
What the longer walks add is context, not more of The Rocks. The historian walk spends its first 50 minutes outside the precinct, at Customs House and Macquarie Place, before 80 minutes in the lanes. The 90 minute walk stays inside The Rocks for its whole length.
Book a guided walk if:
- you want the lanes you would walk straight past alone, like Suez Canal and Kendall Lane
- you care about the convict and plague history more than the views
- you are short on time and want 90 minutes that cover it
Skip it if:
- you mainly want photos of the bridge and the Opera House, which the free route in our guide to things to do around Circular Quay covers
- the history you want comes with a drink at each stop, in which case look at historic pub tours in The Rocks
- Want The Rocks as one stop among many? Ride a hop-on hop-off bus around the city instead

Our pick
If it is your only walk in The Rocks: the Sydney The Rocks Guided Walking Tour. Ninety minutes from Reynolds Cottage, down Suez Canal to Campbell’s Cove and back. It has 1,780 reviews at 4.85 and the only listed pram friendly route.
If you have done the classic walk: Convicts and The Rocks with the historian. It runs 2.5 hours for 15 people at most, adds the city model inside Customs House, and finishes on Argyle Street by a pub. 312 reviews at 4.96.
The one we would skip: the Sydney Walking Tour including The Rocks, if The Rocks is the point. Its listing spends more stop time on Macquarie Street and in Hyde Park than in The Rocks.
Season and timing
The Rocks works in any month. Summer from December to February is hot on the open cove and the steps, so take a morning start. Winter brings shorter days and some rain. The walks go ahead regardless, so check the Bureau of Meteorology forecast only to decide what to wear.
Two things on the calendar change the walk more than the weather. Cruise ships first: when one berths at the Overseas Passenger Terminal, it fills the view at Campbell’s Cove, as the guide on the Oz and Beyond interview put it. The Port Authority puts the cruise season at September to April. Check the terminal schedule before you book if the harbour view matters.
Weekends next. The Rocks Markets fill George Street, Playfair Street and Jack Mundey Place from 10am to 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays, with a smaller market on Fridays. Three of the traveller videos we compared praise them. A group of 20 moves slowly through them.
Late May to June brings Vivid Sydney, when the light shows draw crowds into The Rocks after dark. At the end of October the markets have run a Halloween edition that stays open until 10pm, and Smashd Sydney filmed the lanes busy on a Halloween weekend.

Where does The Rocks tour start?

What will I see on a Sydney Rocks tour?
The lanes first: Suez Canal, Nurses Walk, Greenway Lane and Kendall Lane. Then Campbell's Cove on the harbour, Cadman's Cottage and the Harbour Bridge overhead. The stories run from First Nations history and 1788 through the convicts and the bubonic plague to the 1970s green bans.

How big are the groups on a guided walking tour of The Rocks?

Are there ghost tours in The Rocks?
