Booking Help

Every tour on SydneySide Tours is booked and paid for on Viator, not on this site. You pick a trip here, the button opens that listing on Viator, and Viator handles the payment, the confirmation and any refund. The operator named on your voucher runs the trip on the day. This page covers what happens at each step, where Sydney tours leave from, and who to call when something changes.

The four steps

  1. Pick a trip. Every tour card on this site opens the matching Viator listing, with the live price, the dates that still have seats and the cancellation rule for that trip.
  2. Book on Viator. Choose the date, the start time and how many people are going, then pay. Viator takes the payment. We never see your card details, your name or your booking.
  3. Get the confirmation. Viator emails it straight away for most Sydney tours. It carries the voucher, the operator’s name and phone number, the meeting point and the check-in time.
  4. Turn up. Be at the meeting point on the voucher by the check-in time. That time is usually 15 to 30 minutes before the boat or bus leaves, and it’s the one that counts.

A few trips confirm on request rather than instantly. Private charters and some small-group day trips work this way. The listing says so before you pay, and the operator has a set window to accept before Viator confirms or cancels it. You aren’t charged for a request the operator turns down.

Who holds the money

Viator does. When you pay, the money goes to Viator, which passes it to the operator after the trip. If a tour is cancelled and you’re owed a refund, it comes back from Viator to the card you paid with.

SydneySide Tours is an affiliate of Viator. When someone books through a link on this site, Viator pays us a commission out of its own share. The price you pay is the same as booking on Viator directly. We don’t add a fee, and no operator pays us to appear on a page or to rank higher on one.

The full disclosure, including how commission does and doesn’t shape the pages, sits on our editorial policy. The rules we use to pick tours explain why a trip is on a page at all.

Your confirmation and voucher

The confirmation email comes from Viator, not from us. Check four things on it before the day:

  • The date and start time. A 7:30am departure booked for the wrong Saturday is the most common mistake, and it’s easy to fix if you catch it early.
  • The meeting point. Sydney operators use very specific spots: a numbered wharf at Circular Quay, a pontoon at King Street Wharf, a hotel lobby for a pickup. The voucher names the exact one.
  • The operator’s phone number. This is the number to ring if you’re running late on the day. Save it in your phone before you leave.
  • What to bring. Some trips need photo ID, closed shoes or a printed voucher, and the confirmation says which.

Most Sydney operators accept the voucher on a phone screen. If the listing asks for a printout, the confirmation says so.

No email within an hour of paying? Check your spam folder first, then the bookings section of the Viator app or website. If it isn’t there either, contact Viator. We can’t see or resend bookings.

Departure points and how to reach them

Most Sydney tours leave from one of these places. Your voucher names the exact spot, and the table below is for planning how long it takes to get there.

Departure areaTours that use itGetting there
Circular Quay and Campbell’s CoveWhale watching from Campbells Cove, Wharf 6 and the Eastern Pontoon, harbour cruises, The Rocks walks and pub toursTrain to Circular Quay station, or any ferry. Campbell’s Cove is a 5 minute walk past the Overseas Passenger Terminal.
Darling Harbour (King Street Wharf, Cockle Bay)Dinner and lunch cruises, some whale watching boats from King Street Wharf and Aquarium WharfLight rail, or a 15 minute walk from Town Hall station.
ManlySnorkelling at Shelly Beach and Cabbage Tree BayFerry from Circular Quay, about 30 minutes, then a 15 minute walk along the beachfront.
BondiSurf lessons, one snorkel trip from a Bondi Road dive shop, coastal walksTrain to Bondi Junction, then a bus to the beach. Allow 45 minutes from the city.
MaroubraSome surf lessons. Clovelly, nearby, is the meeting point for several snorkel toursBus from the city. Allow 45 to 60 minutes.
City hotel pickups and central meeting pointsBlue Mountains day trips, hiking toursThe operator collects from listed hotels or a named point in the CBD. Pickups often start before 7am.

Public transport across Sydney runs on the Opal system. You can tap on and off with a contactless bank card or phone instead of buying an Opal card. Tap on at the start of every trip and off at the end, on trains, buses, ferries and light rail alike, or you pay the maximum fare.

Whale watching check-ins can be early. One traveller we watched, Slava Goes Places, checked in at Campbell’s Cove at 6:30am for a fast boat, before the first trains get busy. Leave more time than the trip planner says for any departure before 8am.

If you’re running late

Ring the operator on the number from your voucher, not Viator and not us. Boats and buses leave on time, and a missed departure usually counts as a no-show with no refund. Some operators can move you to a later trip the same day if you call early.

Cancellation, changes and weather

Each Viator listing sets its own cancellation rule, and the tour card on this site shows it where the feed reports it. Most Sydney day tours and cruises allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside 24 hours, expect no refund.

Some trips are stricter. Private charters, multi-day tours and anything that books out a whole boat often need several days’ notice. Read the rule on the Viator page before you pay, because that page is the one Viator holds you and the operator to.

To cancel or change a date, use the Viator app or website. Changing the date usually means cancelling and rebooking, so check the 24 hour window first.

Weather

The operator makes the weather call, usually the evening before or early that morning. Whale watching boats turn back when the swell outside Sydney Heads gets too big. Snorkel trips at Manly stop when the water goes murky after heavy rain. Surf schools move or cancel lessons in dangerous conditions.

If the operator cancels for weather, most listings promise another date or a full refund, and the listing’s own wording is the one that applies. If you cancel because the forecast looks grey but the trip still runs, the normal 24 hour rule applies. For boat trips, the Bureau of Meteorology coastal forecast is the one operators watch.

Rain alone rarely stops a Blue Mountains day trip. Bushfire danger and track closures do, and NSW National Parks alerts list them.

Accessibility and special requests

Access varies a lot by trip type. Large harbour cruise boats usually have a ramp and a level main deck. Fast whale watching boats and snorkel trips involve steps, wet decks or a beach entry. Blue Mountains day trips include lookouts with stairs, and Scenic World has its own access arrangements.

The Viator listing has an accessibility section, but it’s often brief. For a wheelchair, a mobility aid, a pram, a medical condition or a dietary need on a meal cruise, message the operator through Viator before you book and get the answer in writing. The operator is the only one who can promise it.

Children’s ages, minimum heights and swimming ability rules sit on each listing too. Snorkel and surf trips usually set a minimum age.

FAQ

Is the price on this site the same as on Viator?

Yes. The price on each card comes live from Viator, and booking through our link costs the same as going to Viator directly. Viator pays our commission out of its own share, so nothing is added to your total.

Can I book over the phone or pay the operator in cash?

Not through this site. Bookings made through our links happen on Viator and are paid online. Some operators sell tickets direct at their wharf or office, but those bookings sit outside Viator's cancellation rules.

What if the tour isn't what the listing said?

Tell the operator on the day if you can. If it isn't fixed, raise it with Viator through your booking within a few days. If our page described the trip wrongly, email hello@sydneysidetours.com and we'll correct it and log the fix.

Do I need to print my voucher?

Usually not. Most Sydney operators scan or check the voucher on your phone. The confirmation email says if a printout is needed, and a screenshot saves you when the wharf has weak signal.
