Our take

AEA's half day is the small-group version of the classic city drive. A minibus for up to 14 collects you from your hotel, morning or afternoon, then takes in The Rocks, Mrs Macquarie's Chair for the Opera House and Bridge view, the Eastern Suburbs, Bondi Beach and Paddington on the way back. It runs about 3.5 hours.

On our Sydney city tours page it sits with the small-group van tours: a live guide who answers questions, more stops and hotel pickup, for more than the 50-seat coaches. Bottled water is included, but coffee at Bondi is your own cost. Some sights, such as Paddington and Double Bay, are seen from the window. Ring the office the day before to confirm your pickup, as the listing asks. The operator can change the route on the day for weather or traffic.

Good for

  • A first morning in Sydney with hotel pickup
  • Travellers who want questions answered, not recorded commentary

Think twice if

  • You want to walk more. Story of Sydney adds short walks at The Gap and Bondi
  • You are on a budget. The coach tours cost much less
