Our take

The forecourt and foyer of the Opera House are free, but the concert halls are not. Staff told one of the travellers we watched that you need a guided tour or a show ticket to go inside, and this is the tour that gets you in. It is run by the Opera House itself, lasts about an hour and starts from the Welcome Centre. It is the one thing on our day plan in things to do in Sydney that needs booking.

Two things to know before you pay. The Opera House says the standard tour climbs around 300 stairs, with no lift or escalator, so step-free visitors should read its access notes first. And because it is a working venue, which theatres you see depends on rehearsals that day. Late arrivals cannot join once the group has left. Several city coach tours stop outside the Opera House but do not take you in; this is the ticket that does.

Good for

  • Anyone who wants to see the halls, not just the sails
  • A rainy hour in the city. It runs in light rain

Think twice if

  • You cannot manage a lot of stairs
  • You already have a show ticket and only want to see inside
