Our take
This is our pick on the whale watching page if Sydney is your one chance to see a whale. The cruise runs 2.5 hours from Circular Quay Wharf 6 out through the Heads, with live commentary and open-air viewing decks. If no whale is sighted, you can cruise again for free within the same season, and the bigger boat handles a swell better than the speed boats.
The trade-off is numbers: up to 120 people at the rail, and it rates around 4.2, lower than the smaller boats. Food and drinks are for sale, not included. Check in at the Wharf 6 ticket office 30 minutes before; Captain Cook also runs a reconfirmation line on the morning of the trip, because weather can cancel a sailing. The guarantee is a free cruise again, not a refund, so it helps most if you have more days in Sydney. Bring warm layers and seasickness tablets if you need them.
Good for
- A single chance at a whale, with a guarantee behind it
- Families and anyone worried about a rough boat
Think twice if
- You want a small group. The speed boats and Whale Tales take 21 to 30
- You are leaving Sydney the next day. The guarantee is a rebooking

From the operator
See magnificent humpback and southern right whales at play on a Sydney whale-watching cruise. From Circular Quay, this open-water cruise will take you through the entrance of Sydney Harbour and into the open Pacific in search of whales. The open-air viewing decks on board the catamaran offer unobstructed views and the best opportunities for spotting and watching the whales. Getting up close to these gentle giants of the sea is an awe-inspiring experience that you don’t want to miss. With record numbers of whales due to pass along Sydney's coastline this migration season, there are sure to be plenty of sightings and great photo opportunities!
This activity is seasonal, operating from mid-May to early-Novemeber each year.
