Our take

Whale Tales runs a custom-built whale watching boat from King Street Wharf 7 in Darling Harbour, for about 2.5 hours, with up to 30 people on board. The operator says the boat is built to put you right next to the water, for an unobstructed view. It rates close to 4.9, among the best of the mid-size boats on our whale watching page.

It also offers a sighting guarantee or a free return trip. That is a rebooking, not a refund, so it helps most if you have spare days in Sydney. Arrive 20 minutes before departure: Darling Harbour is on the other side of the city from Circular Quay, where many other whale boats leave, so check your voucher. The season runs from May to November. Expect time searching outside the Heads before you see anything, and bring layers and seasickness tablets.

Good for

  • A smaller group than the big cruise boats
  • Staying near Darling Harbour or Barangaroo

Think twice if

  • You get badly seasick. A larger boat is steadier
  • You want food on board. The 4-hour cruise includes a meal
