Our take

This is the same 90-minute walk as our top pick on The Rocks walking tours page, sold for cruise passengers. The company has walked these lanes since 1978, and the walk covers about 2 km of laneways, cobbled streets and courtyards, Cadman's Cottage and views of the Harbour Bridge, with 20 people at most. The guide uses voice amplification, and umbrellas are lent if it rains. It rates around 4.8 from about 40 reviews; the main listing has far more.

It meets at the operator's office, Reynolds Cottage, 28 Harrington Street, next to The Tap Rooms, which the listing says is an easy walk from the Overseas Passenger Terminal. Check in 15 minutes early, as tours leave exactly on time, and allow time to get back on board. Port pickup is only for private bookings. The listing marks it as wheelchair accessible, and our page notes a manual wheelchair and pram friendly route, though uneven surfaces may be hard for powered chairs. There are two departures a day.

Good for

  • Cruise passengers with a few hours in port
  • A first look at The Rocks in 90 minutes

Think twice if

  • Your ship leaves soon after. Leave a buffer
  • You want a longer walk. The historian tour runs 2.5 hours

From the operator

Make the most of your time ashore with The Rocks Walking Tours, sharing Sydney’s history since 1978. Our meeting point in The Rocks is an easy walk from the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay, making this a convenient way to explore Sydney’s historic harbour neighbourhood.

On this 90-minute guided walk, discover laneways, cobbled streets and hidden courtyards that are easy to miss on your own. Your local guide brings the past to life through stories of convicts, sailors, merchants and everyday people who shaped the city.

Explore heritage buildings, terrace cottages and Cadman’s Cottage, and enjoy views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and harbour foreshore along the way.

With no more than 20 guests, a leisurely pace and opportunities to ask questions, you’ll enjoy a personal introduction to The Rocks. Covering approximately two kilometres, with two daily departures to choose from, this tour combines local knowledge, storytelling and hidden discoveries during your Sydney visit.
