Our take
This is the dunes on their own, one of the two short trips we list on our Port Stephens tours page for anyone who does not need a cruise attached. A 4WD guide drives a group of up to 19 down Birubi Beach, shows you how to find pipis in the sand and explains the dune system, then heads up into the Stockton dunes for unlimited sandboarding. It runs about an hour, with boards, water and park fees included, and rates around 4.7.
Driving onto the dunes yourself needs a 4WD and a Worimi beach vehicle permit, which is why most visitors take a tour, as our things to do in Port Stephens guide explains. All three travellers we watched on the dunes said the slide down is quick and the climb back up is the hard part. Check in at the red trailer in the lower car park past the surf club. Compared with the unlimited sandboarding trip, this adds the beach drive and pipi hunt.
