Our take
This is not a day trip. It is a 1.5-hour night session at Wentworth Falls, run by an astrophysicist with experience at Sydney Observatory and New Zealand's Mt John Observatory. You use a professional-grade telescope and astronomical binoculars to look at the southern sky, with warm blankets and hot chocolate. We list it on the Blue Mountains tours page as something different.
You make your own way there: it meets at the Wentworth Falls picnic area, about 10 minutes' drive from Katoomba, so it suits people staying in the mountains or driving. The listing says the area is wheelchair accessible and prams are fine, which is rare for the mountains. It is non-refundable, and clear skies decide the night, so check the forecast before booking. It rates around 4.8. Bring warm layers. Nights in the mountains are cold, even in summer.
Good for
- An evening activity if you are staying in the mountains
- Families and wheelchair users
Think twice if
- You are coming from Sydney without a car
- Your dates are not fixed. It cannot be refunded
