Our take

This is the walk we recommend if you only do one in The Rocks, and it is our pick on The Rocks walking tours page. The company has been walking these lanes since 1978, the walk takes 90 minutes, and it covers about 2 km of cobblestones and worn steps. The guide uses voice amplification, which matters on George Street.

From a guide interview we watched, the walk tells The Rocks in four parts: First Nations history and 1788, the convicts, the bubonic plague and the 1970s green bans. You go down Suez Canal and Nurses Walk to Campbell's Cove on the harbour, past Cadman's Cottage (currently closed for conservation, so you see the outside) and back through lanes you would miss on your own. Check in 15 minutes early at Reynolds Cottage, 28 Harrington Street, next to The Tap Rooms. Tours leave exactly on time. It is the only Rocks walk we compare with a listed pram-friendly route.

Good for

  • A first visit to The Rocks in 90 minutes
  • Families with a pram

Think twice if

  • You want the longer, deeper version. The 2.5 hour historian walk goes further
  • You would rather do The Rocks with a drink. See the pub walks

From the operator

Discover the hidden corners of The Rocks with The Rocks Walking Tours, sharing Sydney’s history since 1978. Our experienced local guides bring the past to life through captivating stories of convicts, sailors, merchants and everyday people who shaped the city.

On this 90-minute walk, explore narrow laneways, cobbled streets and tucked-away courtyards that are easy to miss on your own. Discover heritage buildings, terrace cottages and Cadman’s Cottage, with views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and harbour foreshore along the way.

With no more than 20 guests, you can ask questions, connect with your guide and enjoy a personal introduction to this historic neighbourhood. Walk approximately two kilometres at a leisurely pace, uncovering stories behind places you might otherwise pass by.

Whether you’re visiting Sydney for the first time or rediscovering your own city, our blend of local knowledge, storytelling and hidden discoveries makes this a truly memorable way to experience The Rocks.
