Our take

This walk covers the city and The Rocks in one go: 2.5 hours from the Archibald Fountain in Hyde Park, past St Mary's Cathedral, Hyde Park Barracks, the Rum Hospital and Macquarie Street, through the Botanic Garden and down into The Rocks. Groups are capped at 16, guides use voice amplification, and it rates around 4.9 at a low price.

On our Rocks walking tours page it is the one we would skip if The Rocks is the point, because its listing spends more stop time on Macquarie Street and in Hyde Park than in The Rocks. As a first walk through the colonial core, which is how our Sydney walking tours page lists it, it works well. Look for the guide with a pink flag. Ignore the 110 Elizabeth Street pin in map apps and phone wallets, which the listing says is wrong; ask a taxi for St James station. One reviewer called the pace brisk.

Good for

  • A first walk that covers the city and The Rocks
  • A low price for a small group

Think twice if

  • You want The Rocks in depth. Take the 90-minute Rocks walk
  • You prefer a slow pace
